Artificial sweeteners, compared

Sweeteners are one of the more contested corners of the label. Here are the 16 approved in the EU, each rated on an EFSA-based scale. Only 2 come out with no concern at all; 4 are worth avoiding and 10 worth watching. Which one matters more than whether it is “artificial”.

A quick reframe before the list. The useful question is never “is it a sweetener?” but “which sweetener, and what does the evidence say?” Natural does not mean safe, and artificial does not mean harmful. Each one below links to its full detail and, where we have written one, a direct “is it bad for you?” answer.

Are artificial sweeteners bad for you?
It depends which one. Of the 16 sweeteners approved in the EU, 4 are rated avoid (including Acesulfame K, Aspartame, Sucralose), 10 are worth watching, and 2 carry no significant concern. The label "sweetener" tells you nothing on its own. The specific substance is what matters.
Which sweetener is the safest?
Among the ones we track, Saccharin and Neotame come out with no significant concern at normal use. Several of the "watch" sweeteners are also fine in moderation. The ones to be more careful with are the "avoid" group, such as Acesulfame K, Aspartame, Sucralose.
Is aspartame or sucralose worse?
Both aspartame and sucralose are rated avoid on our scale, for different reasons. Neither is clearly "worse" across the board. Tap either one below for the specific evidence and what EFSA says.
Are natural sweeteners better than artificial ones?
Not automatically. "Natural" is a marketing word, not a safety rating. Some plant-derived sweeteners rate well and some artificial ones rate poorly, but the split does not fall neatly along the natural/artificial line. Judge each on its own evidence.
