What is Yuzu Health?

Yuzu Health is a food scanner app for iPhone. Point your camera at a product barcode and it shows what's really inside: a 0–100 health score, and every ingredient and E-number rated on an EFSA-based safety scale (safe, watch, or avoid) with a plain-English reason and a link to the source. It's built specifically around EU food labelling.

What it does

Scan a barcode, and within seconds you get three things: an overall score, a colour-coded list of every additive, and (tap any ingredient) an explanation of what it is, what it does, and what regulators say. You get more than a verdict. You get the reasoning behind it, so you can decide for yourself at the shelf.

How the scoring works

The 0–100 score combines nutritional quality, additive risk and organic status. Additives are rated against EFSA scientific opinions and the EU Food Additives Database. Yuzu also separates two different questions: “is this additive a problem?” (a judgement about a specific substance) from “does this product have a lot of sugar?” (a question of quantity). It won't red-flag sugar as if it were a hazardous additive. That would be meaningless. Full methodology →

What makes it different

Yuzu is EU-first. Where general scanners give you a number, Yuzu explains every E-number in plain English and links the EFSA opinion behind each rating, so the verdict is checkable, not a black box. It reads European product labels natively, and when a product isn't already known it falls back to public databases and AI-assisted analysis so local EU retail products still resolve.

Platform & access

Yuzu Health is on the iOS App Store. You can scan as a guest with no account; signing in is optional and only syncs your history across devices. It's available as a subscription.

Frequently asked questions

What is Yuzu Health?
Yuzu Health is a food scanner app for iPhone. How does Yuzu Health work?
Scan a barcode and Yuzu looks the product up, reads its ingredient list, and grades it. Every additive is classified against EFSA scientific opinions; the overall 0–100 score combines nutritional quality, additive risk and organic status. When a product is not already known, Yuzu falls back to public food databases and AI-assisted ingredient analysis so it still resolves.
Does Yuzu Health work in the EU?
Yes, it is designed for EU products. It understands E-numbers and rates them against EFSA opinions and the EU Food Additives Database, which is exactly what a scanner needs to be accurate on European labelling. It works on products from other regions too.
What does Yuzu Health rate?
Packaged food and drink. It grades additives (E-numbers) and overall nutritional quality. It deliberately does not slap a colour on bulk nutrients like sugar and salt as if they were additives. That is a question of how much, answered by a product’s nutrition profile, not its additive list.
Do I need an account to use Yuzu Health?
No. You can scan as a guest without creating an account. Signing in is optional and only adds cross-device history sync.
Is Yuzu Health free?
Yuzu Health is available on the App Store as a subscription. You can download it and it uses a subscription to unlock scanning.
