E100 — Curcumin
E100 (Curcumin), a color, is rated "safe": no significant concern. The yellow pigment from turmeric root. Used to color mustard, curries, cheese rinds, butter, and soft drinks. Widely considered safe at food levels.
What is Curcumin?
The bright yellow pigment extracted from turmeric root. Used to color mustard, curries, cheese rinds, butter, soft drinks, and many "natural color" snack foods.
What does it do to the body?
Your gut absorbs very little of it, and what does pass through has antioxidant activity. No safety issues at the amounts used in food. The doses used in turmeric supplements are far higher than what you would ever get from a colored food.
What regulators say
EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) set an acceptable daily intake of 3 mg per kg of body weight per day in 2010. The FDA approves it as a natural color additive.
Risk rating: Safe
Cleared by EFSA with no significant concern at typical dietary exposure. Common, well-studied, and not a reason to put a product back on the shelf.
