What is Ponceau 4R?
A bright red synthetic dye, sometimes called Cochineal Red A despite not actually containing cochineal. Used in desserts, processed meats, candies, and some Asian sauces in the EU.
What does it do to the body?
One of the Southampton Six dyes linked to hyperactivity in children. Can also trigger allergic skin and breathing reactions in sensitive people. The body excretes most of it within a day.
What regulators say
EU labels must carry the "may affect activity and attention in children" warning. The FDA does not approve it for food in the United States; Norway also restricts it.
Risk rating: Avoid
Known or suspected to cause harm: a substance EFSA or another regulator has flagged, or one restricted in some jurisdictions. Best kept out of a regular diet.
