E414 — Acacia gum
E414 (Acacia gum), a thickener, is rated "watch": fine in moderation. Gum arabic. A natural fiber harvested from acacia trees. Used as a stabiliser in soft drinks, confectionery, and as a soluble fiber in some "healthy" products.
What is Acacia gum?
Gum arabic, harvested from the dried sap of acacia trees in sub-Saharan Africa. Used to keep ingredients suspended in soft drinks, prevent sugar crystallisation in confectionery, and as a soluble fiber in some health drinks.
What does it do to the body?
Acts as a prebiotic soluble fiber that feeds beneficial gut bacteria. Large amounts can cause gas. No realistic safety concern.
What regulators say
EFSA and the FDA both treat it as a safe additive with no numerical acceptable daily intake.
Risk rating: Watch
Mixed evidence or a specific concern (gut, allergy, or contested safety data). Not alarming, but worth keeping an eye on rather than eating without limit.
